Brief Description of Duties

The candidate will assume the supporting role in School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and provide full support to the faculty and students in all NSF-CREST work related laboratories and perform variety of tasks in the day-to-day operations. He/she will provide technical support for academic and research activities connected with the faculty and students of the SEAS at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assumes leadership role and provides support to Center of Nanotechnology Research and Education (CNRE).
  • Gain the mastery in operating CNRE and other equipment and conduct experiment to support research projects.
  • Prepare training resources to teach students and other users about the safe and responsible utilization of CNRE resources.
  • Design new experimental setup by integrating multiple equipment and software control programs.
  • Maintain the inventory of the supplies and safety gears to ensure smooth experiments.
  • Assists with the daily supervision of the activities in -SEAS laboratories and is responsible for maintaining the equipment and safety of operation.
  • Assist in conducting experiments to support Center of Nanotechnology Research and Education (CNRE) research projects.
  • Provide supervision to student workers, guest researchers, and teaching assistants to deliver reliable and technically up-to-date laboratory experiences. Assist with tutoring students in Engineering. Ensures that service to students is available during the scheduled time of operation.
  • Assists the faculty supervisor with developing and producing a manual for the laboratories.
  • Provide supervision to student workers and teaching assistants to deliver reliable and technically up-to-date laboratory experiences.
  • Maintains hardware and software in the labs.
  • Design and conduct hands on activities for workshops and high school students to enhance their interest in STEM fields.
  • Prepare promotional materials for the CNRE Lab.
  • Help in preparing reports for the funding agencies.
  • Maintain inventory for laboratories, secure supplies, and consumables as necessary to support laboratory program.
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the equipment in the school’s laboratories.
  • Conduct hands on activities to support outreach activities and workshops.
  • Performs other duties assigned.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate and graduate degree in Physics or Engineering. Familiarity with a variety of research fields concepts, practices, and procedures. Demonstrated experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals is preferred
  • Preferred skills include ability to make software control programs for instruments, experience in operating vacuum systems, low temperature systems, and magnetic material measurements.  
  • Experience in micro fabrication technologies using photolithography and thin film deposition.
