Brief Description of Duties

The Coordinator of Residence Life is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position within the Division of Student Development and Success. This position plays a vital role in advancing the University’s strategic goals of enhancing student life, improving retention and graduation rates, and fostering a thriving, interconnected campus community. As a member of the Residence Life team, the coordinator supports the holistic development of residential students through leadership, staff supervision, and community engagement initiatives. This role includes collaborative work with both university stakeholders and leased apartment management to ensure a high-quality residential experience that promotes student success beyond the classroom. The coordinator is expected to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations, to meet the dynamic needs of the residential community. The position reports directly to the Director of Residence Life.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Staff Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise Resident Assistants (RAs) or Community Advisors.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide coaching, and foster professional growth.
  • Coordinate duty rotation schedules and ensure continuous on-call support.
  • Hold regular staff meetings and one-on-one check-ins for updates and support.
  • Lead team-building initiatives to promote collaboration and staff morale.
  • Address staff conflicts and mediate resolutions as needed.

Community Building

  • Develop and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive residential environment.
  • Implement programs that foster engagement, leadership, and a sense of belonging.
  • Proactively address community issues such as isolation, conflicts, or disruptions.
  • Collaborate with campus departments to enhance community resources and initiatives.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and cultural awareness through intentional programming.
Event Management
  • Plan and execute large-scale events, including move-ins, community fairs, and hall-wide programs.
  • Support staff and residents in developing smaller, interest-based programs.
  • Manage event logistics: budgeting, space reservations, materials, and promotions.
  • Build partnerships with local organizations for event sponsorship and support.
  • Evaluate events through participation data and feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure all events comply with university policies and risk management standards.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Respond to critical residential issues, including crisis response, conflict resolution, and conduct matters.
  • Support tasks and initiatives within the division
  • Serve on university committees
  • Serve as the primary liaison between university housing staff and leased apartment management, coordinating Move-in/Move-Out logistics, maintenance, and other building concerns.
  • Use Maxient or similar systems for record-keeping, occupancy tracking, and incident reporting.
  • Assist with housing assignments, occupancy data management, and housing communications.
  • Actively participate in the Residence Life professional staff on-call rotation for crisis/emergency response, including availability during evenings and weekends.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a residential life setting or relevant student affairs area.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Experience with student conduct, crisis response, and programming preferred.
  • Familiarity with housing software systems (e.g., Maxient) is a plus.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
