Brief Description of Duties

The incumbent functions as the Assistant Director Student Success in the Division of Student Success and Development and reports to the Assistant Vice President of Student Success or their designee. The Assistant Director of Student Success is a critical managerial role in supervising the Student Success Center Staff, including support programs such as, but not limited to Supplemental Instruction and First Year/Transfer Experience. The Assistant Director researches and implements innovative research-based programming that helps foster student success university-wide. This position supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance and resources necessary to be successful with a strong focus on student retention.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides direct supervision and leadership of Student Success Center(s) staff and personnel
  2. Assists the Assistant Vice President of Student Success in the administrative duties of Academic Advising including but not limited to: strategic planning, representing the department on various committees and work groups
  3. Must possess the ability to analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data for the purposes of implementing innovative practices and strategies around retention and student success.
  4. Develops assessment and evaluation tools to track and gage the effects of the Student Achievement and Student Success Centers activities on student learning, engagement and retention.
  5. Explaining transfer policies and procedures to students, faculty, and staff, as well as possessing a robust knowledge of the university general education and degree requirements
  6. Assesses the needs of students through analyses of internal university reports, faculty feedback of student performance and input from students seeking support services.
  7. Develop and maintain close working relationships with academic departments and divisions within the college.
  8. Develop assessment and evaluation tools to track and gage the impact of implemented programming on student learning, engagement and retention with the Assistant Vice President of Student Success or their designee.
  9. Assist in managing and providing training on the electronic student success platforms such as, but not limited to EAB and Degree Works.
  10. Serve on the University-Wide Student Success & Retention Committee
  11. Coordinates the facilitation of the Academic Advising Alliance and the development of the university Academic Advising Handbook.
  12. Must be flexible to work at the Community College Campus and the Flagship Campus-Van Ness.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. A Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited academic institution in Student Services, Education, Counseling, Behavioral or Social Science Education or a closely related field.
  2. A minimum of three (3) - five (5) years of experience in a related field.
  3. Demonstrable evidence of the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators and a diverse student population.
  4. Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office, and other related software packages.
  5. Excellent communication leadership and relationship building skills required.

Employment Benefits: Depending upon length of appointment, selectee may or may not be eligible for full benefits such as health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the University of the District of Columbia's retirement plan (TIAA).
