Brief Description of Duties

The Director of Learning Design & Outcomes will provide institution-wide leadership for the creation and management process for building and reviewing courses for quality standard; Provide direct supervision of an Instructional Designer and Instructional Consultant to design, develop, and deliver effective courses, ensuring adherence to targeted outcomes and best practices in design, assessment, and student learning; work with faculty and departments to develop strategy, plan, and develop scalable solutions for building courses; train, mentor, and manage faculty affiliated with the Center for the Advancement of Learning in the creation and design of rigorous online and blended courses; create and deliver training and provide support to faculty and staff across the university; and collaborate with the Director of Institutional Assessment and Outcomes on student learning outcomes assessment at the program level. Lastly, the position is responsible for all instructional design related project management, maintaining records, and coordination. Work is performed under administrative supervision of the Assistant Chief Academic Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead building, implementing, and coordinating for the Online Building Certification process and coordinating for the Course Design Faculty Learning Community.
  • Design and coordinate a process for assessing student learning outcomes in UDC’s Learning Management System (Blackboard Ultra).
  • Consider existing processes and, with input from the administration and faculty, improve or create a new process for scalable, collaboratively building online courses.
  • Assess quality assurance options and implement, possibly serving as a reviewer, to ensure courses include Universal Design for Learning principles and are fully accessible.
  • Supervise an Instructional Consultant and an Instructional Designer (one full-time or two part-time).
  • Serve as a mentor to CAL Faculty Fellows.
  • Provide recommendations to faculty for a variety of technological and technique-based strategies for online learning and online course management.  This includes instruction sequencing, implementation of multimedia elements, converting analog activities and resources to digital formats, online learning and group collaboration activities, assessments, assist faculty in identifying ways to leverage asynchronous and synchronous approaches.\
  • Work with departments to analyze learning objectives, design digital content and learning activities, and create and implement strategies for online program creation.
  • Assist in the assessment of teaching/learning challenges and provide tools, resources, and training to the faculty that will help address these challenges.
  • Create professional development opportunities and resources to help faculty and staff build quality online courses.            

Minimum Job Requirement

  • PhD in Curriculum and/or Instructional Design, related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience with course/curriculum/instructional design at the university level.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching online.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Preferred: Additional online course design certifications or training completed.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
