Brief Description of Duties

The incumbent functions as the Director of the Workforce Development Student Success team at the University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC). The incumbent reports directly to the Dean of Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning (WOLL), who sets the overall objectives and resources available. The supervisor provides administrative direction with assignments in terms of broadly defined missions or functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs the vision and work of the WOLL Student Success Specialists. Responsible for supervising and directing the Student Success Specialists ensuring that all the student success goals are met.
  • Oversees the completion and success of all WOLL Student Success Specialists' efforts.
  • Leads the coordination of the WDLL Student Success Specialists while collaborating with other UDC offices and services as needed.
  • Participates fully in all the work of the WOLL Student Success Specialists (described in #5-8 below).
  • Develops programming and organization for student orientation.
  • Provides academic advising and other services to support student retention.
  • Develops new policies and programs to enhance student support services. Some efforts will include:
  1. Creating a student information center to ensure that community college students have a central location to go to for questions and assistance.
  2. Creating systems to follow up with students that are in danger of not persisting.
  3. Creating systems to help students prepare to transfer to two-year and four­ year institutions.
  • Collaborates with the community college leadership team in the long-term planning process of conceptualizing and developing key programs and systems related to ensuring student success.
  • Researches and recommends programs and interventions that will benefit all students, especially students at risk in the Workforce Development division.
Other Duties
  • May be expected to assist in gathering and tracking data on UDC-CC student success rates.
  • Performs other related duties pertaining to the development of the community college as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in higher education or related field preferred.
  • Background in student support services preferred.
  • At least four years experience in higher education, student service, or related field.
  • Proven leadership and management experience.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
