Brief Description of Duties

The Director of TRIO and College Preparatory Programs is responsible for overseeing the TRIO grant, and other college preparatory programs including planning and coordinating program activities, supervising personnel, and reporting related to the proper application of grant provisions, staff supervision, grant reporting, and fiscal management.  This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Student Success. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures preparation, submission, and negotiation of the TRIO/Special Student Services proposals.
  • Keeps cognizant of all federal regulations concerning the TRIO/ Student Support Services as they become effective.
  • Ensures that preparation, submission and responds to all reports required by the U.S. Department of Education and supervising unit. Are prepared, submitted, and responded to in a timely manner.
  • Maintains open lines of communication between the U.S. Department of Education, the University community, target schools, and community agencies and organizations.
  • Represents the TRIO Project by participating in university programs, committees, and activities.
  • Schedules and conducts staff in-service training and orientation activities.
  • Serves as liaison to community agencies which provide services to the participants who are referred from the TRIO/Special Student Services.
  • Coordinates project efforts between the University and the community.
  • Supervises the maintenance of filing system, counseling activities, and participant records.
  • Supervises the project staff and is responsible for the development and coordination of activities among the staff.
  • Interviews and hires all personnel and is responsible for orientation, opportunity for professional development and evaluation.
  • Performs other necessary duties that will promote the TRIO projects on the local and national level.
  • Coordinates the activities for all College Preparatory Programs.
  • Adheres to the University policies and procedures in carrying out the programs.
Other Duties
  • Coordinate programmatic data collection, prepares reports, and monitors progress of student programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in related discipline from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education
  • Three years’ related experience, preferably directing or working with federal TRIO grants in a college environment.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
