Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work, Speech-Language Pathology Program invites applications for a ninemonth, full-time continuing faculty position in the Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program. This is a tenure track assistant or tenured/tenure eligible associate professor position that is available for a target start date of August 16, 2023. The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia!s only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University serves approximately 4,000 students across its two-year, baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students. The Speech-Language Pathology Program is housed in the Division of Education, Health, and Social Work. The Program is CAA accredited and currently offers a graduate degree in speech-language pathology. Program faculty are highly committed to preparing students for competitive generalist practice with supplemental experiences in literacy, concussion syndrome, tele-health, second language acquisition, and transgender voice. The program has historically prioritized training students to meet the needs of underserved, multicultural populations through focus on clinical cultural competence and evidence-based practice across a diverse continuum of client populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in the speech-language pathology program, specifically in the following areas: Aphasia, TBI, Executive Function, Memory, Adult Learning Disability, and/or Social/ Pragmatic Language;
  • Lead the development and implementation of specialty neurogenic language and adult clinics including TBI, concussion syndrome, executive function, memory, and/or aphasia;
  • Support clinical education — supervision and didactic, in adult and neurogenic language;
  • Work closely with the program assessment team to monitor data system development and data collection, analysis, and reporting to University stakeholders and to accreditation and other external agencies, as well as use data for decision-making in the Program;
  • Maintain a level of scholarly engagement that includes evidence driven teaching and clinical practice, publication, presentation, and leadership on committees internally and externally;
  • Establish annual performance goals and objectives which are congruent with the University!s strategic goals and the College!s strategic initiatives and support the Division’s inter professional research, practice, and teaching goals and community-partnered teaching, learning, and research; and
  • Work closely with the Division Chair and Division program directors and coordinators to establish and accomplish regional/Middle States accreditation and professional/ASHA CAA accreditation goals.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology and a Doctorate in Speech - Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, or ASHA/CAA approved related discipline;
  • Current clinical certification in speech-language pathology from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association (ASHA);
  • At least 5 years of certified experience in the field of Speech-Language Pathology; • District of Columbia Licensure or eligibility for a DC License in Speech-Language Pathology;
  • Higher education teaching experience (a minimum of two years, five years required of associate professor candidates); and
  • Evidence of promotion in rank and tenure approval required of associate professor candidates.



                A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
