Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, Education faculty appointment with a target start date of August 2021.

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University services approximately 5,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students. 

The responsibilities of the position include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses face to face, with possible opportunities for hybrid or online instruction. In addition, this person will provide supervision and observation feedback to candidates at their student teaching sites and assist with establishing mutually beneficial partnerships with schools/educational facilities in the surrounding area. Other duties include serving on division, program, college, and/or university committees, maintaining an active research agenda, working collaboratively with program faculty and area partners, performing service, administrative, and accreditation-related tasks as necessary to enhance the quality of the program, and performing tasks related to the development of excellence in educator preparation at UDC. The successful candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration and work toward continuous improvement as part of a team.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate scholarly engagement, including: research, grant writing, publishing and presenting, student advising, outcomes assessment, service to the program, department, college, University and community. In addition, the candidate must be willing to participate in recruitment activities. Experience with CAEP or NCATE is strongly preferred.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • An earned doctorate with an emphasis in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of three successful years of experience in PK-12 schools.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, and prior training and educational experience.
Additional Duties
  • Collaborate with faculty and community stakeholders for program improvement.
  • Work closely with other University, College, and Department faculty and professionals.
  • Participate in program governance at the College and University levels as well as contribute to one’s professional organizations.
  • Provide assistance in writing and submitting documents and reports associated with accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or degree in Elementary Education.
  • Experience teaching in higher education setting—preferably courses for Elementary Education.
  • Established record of scholarly productivity.
  • A demonstrated record of membership and participation in relevant professional organizations.
  • Hold certification or licensure pertinent to the profession.
  • Candidates with certifications or endorsements in Math, Social Studies, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or ESL are preferred, but not required.


                A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
