Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent serves as the Director of Business Process Management in the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, reporting to the Associate Vice President. The Director is responsible for strategic leadership and oversight of business affairs and business systems throughout the University at large. The Director creates, redesigns, and re-engineer’s business processes to improve and drive operational efficiency and effectiveness. They are also responsible for developing comprehensive and innovative enterprise solutions aligning with institutional goals and objectives. The Director provides oversight and implementation support of business planning, operations, policy and process development, and productivity outcomes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as a process improvement sponsor; provides vision and strategic direction while leading initiatives to analyze and resolve complex business problems; ensures that policies, procedures, and business management methodologies align with the University and District plans and regulations;
  • Provides operational leadership for business systems, business processes design and/or re-engineering, development and operational strategic planning leveraging unit-level expertise to create innovative strategies, processes and procedures;
  • Gathers information from the customer to understand their needs (demand management) and detailed requirements. Facilitates open communication and discussion between stakeholders, using feedback to assess and promote understanding of need for future changes in services, products and systems. Gathers consensus on changes to be made and directs the planning and implementation of the change. Maintains contact with the customer and stakeholders throughout to ensure satisfaction. Captures and disseminates technical and business information;
  • Initiates process improvement discussions and works with stakeholders to conduct detailed business cost-benefit analysis and build business cases by calculating the business value and risk value;
  • Develops key performance indicators and other metrics for evaluating efficiency of process improvements;
  • Guides and supports units to address teaching and learning challenges through solutions-based, best-practice approaches and implementation of new processes and procedures;
  • Leads development of enterprise-wide projects’ life cycle from inception to completion including justification, planning, execution, organizational readiness and change management;
  • Leverages the enterprise governance structure to determine business process priorities;
  • Gathers and investigates information from a variety of sources, and explores new ideas and different viewpoints. Probes information and identifies any critical gaps. Maintains an awareness of the organization, monitors the context in which the organization operates and finds out about best practice approaches;
  • Builds and sustains relationships with a network of key stakeholders internally and externally. Proactively offers assistance for a mutually beneficial relationship. Anticipates and is responsive to stakeholder needs;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of work experience in the business process improvement.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
