Brief Description of Duties 

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for an Assistant/Associate faculty member in Health Education, with a start date of approximately August 16, 2019.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach undergraduate courses to Health Education students, as well as participate in scholarly activities in an area of public health and health education.  May teach across disciplines other courses related to public health and health education utilizing a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes..
  2. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry level positions in public health.
  3. Work with students to plan and mentor research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the public health and health education.
  4. Have a research focus in any of the following area: community based public health, epidemiology of populations, or environmental health.
  5. Advise students, hold office hours (requires an on campus commitment of four (4) days per week), and participate in department and university service.
  6. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
  7. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban community health issues related to underserved populations in the District of Columbia. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.
  8. Perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  9. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Public Health and Health Education practice, especially related to community health prevention and promotion.


Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Doctorate in Public Health or Health Education or Health Management;  
  2. Three years of teaching or clinical experience in Public Health or Health Education  or Health Management field;
  3. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  4. Proven record of teaching, research, program planning and problem-solving skills;
  5. Familiarity with and adherence to CEPH accreditation standards of Public Health and Health Education at the baccalaureate level;
  6. Familiarity with or ability to become familiar with the urban land-grant university system and its dual mission or academic excellence and community outreach.
  7. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence based research and individual expertise.
  8. Demonstrate accurate use of Blackboard and Banner systems.


  A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent at the Assistant and Associate level.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
