The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC-DACSL) invites applications to fill two visiting law positions at the assistant or associate professor level. We are interested in candidates desiring to teach in our clinical program who can also teach Contracts II and/or Criminal Law. We are also particularly interested in candidates who are willing to teach in our evening program. Candidates must demonstrate a record of strong academic performance and excellent potential for scholarly achievement. Relevant experience and a demonstrated potential for outstanding clinical teaching is expected.

Brief Description of Duties
The primary responsibility of a Professor of Law is to teach his or her class in an effective and scholarly manner. Closely related is the Professor of Law's accessibility to students outside the classroom and his or her assistance in students' academic work by supervising directed clinical and academic work and serving as a faculty advisor on independent legal research. A Professor Law has a responsibility to contribute toward the growth and understanding of the law, to participate in the activities of the Bar and professional or learned societies, and to participate in the various law school activities necessary to the successful functioning and harmony of the institution including faculty meetings, committees, conferences, continuing education projects, recruiting efforts, and similar activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the educational mission and academic policies of the School of Law;

  • Remain current in his or her academic discipline and to instruct assigned courses in a manner consistent with the scheduled time, course content, and course credit approved by the School of Law;

  • Participate in faculty governance by serving on faculty committees and attending faculty meetings;

  • Participate in Faculty Advisor Program by meeting with assigned student advisees and providing academic guidance; and

  • Complete all other teaching, academic, and clinical assignments undertaken or which are part of the faculty member's duties, in a responsible, professional, ethical, and timely manner.

Minimum Job Requirements

Associate Professor of Law

  1. A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor of Law shall have:

  • an earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state;
  • demonstrated teaching competence and a record of scholarship and professional growth;
  • demonstrated continuing professional attainment; and
  • at least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience in an accredited law school.Assistant Professor of Law.

Assistant Professor of Law

  1. A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor of Law shall have:

  • an earned Juris Doctor degree and be a member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state or be in the process of becoming a member of one of the said Bars;
  • potential teaching excellence and demonstrated professional competence.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
