Brief Description of Duties

We are seeking a licensed Registered Dietitian (RD) with active registration, a licensed Food Safety Inspector or an individual who has the ability to obtain the licensure as required in the District of Columbia.

The Assistant Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health (CNDH) reports directly to the Director of the Center, which is one of the land-grant Centers of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The Assistant Director provides leadership in research and community outreach in close collaboration with the Director of CNDH to coordinate, implement, evaluate and improve food security, food safety and food quality of neighborhoods across the District of Columbia. The incumbent works in partnership with federal and local agencies to facilitate behavior change in DC communities related to health, wellness and fitness; provides leadership in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating nutrition, health and physical activity-related wellness programs; collaborates with community groups and agencies to further research and program goals related to obesity prevention, nutrient density, fitness and other health outcomes; generates external support and funding to support program and research outcomes; and maintains professional competencies and skills required for professional practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes assessment techniques to identify local research needs and ensure cultural relevancy and appropriateness.
  • Provides excellent grant writing and management skills to plan, execute, and assess research and outreach programs in CNDH.
  • Works collaboratively with other federal and district agencies and service providers to effectively address local and national food safety, food security, nutrition, health and wellness research priorities.
  • Supervises all staff associated with research programs in CNDH.
  • Utilizes a variety of available delivery modes to provide educational programs and opportunities supported by research and evident based and expertise of the affiliated university.
  • Disseminates research findings through peer reviewed publication, newsletters, and conference presentations.
  • Networks with other professionals and agencies to effectively serve the needs of individuals, families, and communities in the District of Columbia.
  • Teaches one graduate or undergraduate course or equivalent land-grant certificates per semester.
  • Collaborates with faculty and program specialists in the planning and implementation research priorities.
  • Monitors and evaluates demographic trends for use in research programs and community development.
  • Completes required reports, including budget, plans of work, reports of accomplishments, and other documentations needed for research program effectiveness.
  • Identifies funding sources and writes grants to fund the expansion and improvement of research and community outreach programs in CNDH.
  • Participates in interagency meetings, task forces, and projects and practices effective time management and prioritizing of tasks.
  • Represents the Director of the CNDH and the AD of land-grant Programs in internal and external meetings as needed.
  • Maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies; and
  • Acts as a senior scientist and community outreach specialist for CAUSES.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree (doctorate degree preferred) in food sanitation, food safety, dietetics, food science, nutrition science, public health, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of four years of research, teaching and supervisory experience
  • Proven commitment to outcomes and success in executing the responsibilities and duties of their position.
  • Registered dietitian (RD) with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and licensure as required by the District of Columbia or licensed Food Safety Inspector as required in the District of Columbia; or ability to obtain required licensure.
  • Evidence of maintaining continuing education requirements as expected by the profession.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
