Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) invites nominations and applications for the Director of Nursing Education, a leadership position in the proposed new School of Health and Clinical Sciences. The School will be an essential component of UDC's College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). UDC is the only public institution of higher education in the nation's capital. Its mission and vision support a designation as an urban public land-grant and historically black college and university. The Director of Nursing Education will report to the Associate Dean of CAUSES.

Founded in 1851, UDC comprises the undergraduate flagship, the embedded UDC Community College with 21 associate degrees and several certificate programs, and the David A. Clarke School of Law, one of only 6 accredited HBCU law schools in the nation. Approximately 3,500 students are beneficiaries of learning and research with over 200 full-time and approximately 300 adjunct or visiting faculty. The students undertake study in 81 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business and Public Administration; the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and the School of Law.

The Director of Nursing Education joins in this mission to deliver support for students to succeed in nursing education in both the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Director of Nursing Education will be both mentor and model, advancing a vision for the future of the nursing profession, bridging the best parts of nursing traditions with a transformative experience for students and faculty, alike.
  • The position's primary focus will be to meet District of Columbia Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing professional standards. Achieving acceptable National Council Licensure Examination pass and graduation rates and meeting campus enrollment, retention, and graduation goals will be paramount.
  • The Director of Nursing Education will work to establish an environment that provides quality instruction leading to successful program completion.
  • The Director will be an important, inspiring team member, encouraging interdepartmental relations, providing oversight of clinical site agreements, and supporting the Deans in the operation, development, and successful licensure and job placement of all UDC nursing students.


Minimum Job Requirements

Requirements and expectations of the Director of Nursing Education include the following:

 

  • Knowledge of Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs and Associate level degree programs;
  • Excellent communication skills to inspire, motivate, and work with others in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment;
  • Substantial management experience, including administration, advising, teaching, planning, prioritizing, problem-solving, scheduling, evaluating, delegating, and budgeting;
  • Ability to manage academic reporting requirements for federal, state, accrediting commissions, and other interested parties;
  • Knowledge of various Learning Management Systems, specifically Blackboard, or other commonly used systems;
  • Fluency and knowledge of the Nursing CAS (The Centralized Application for Nursing Programs) recruitment portal;
  • Understanding of and working with distance education programs, including measuring student learning outcomes;
  • Ability to oversee interviewing, hiring, and supervision of the nursing instructional, clinical, and support staff;
  • Commitment to deans and faculty to assist in transcript evaluation and appropriate transferability of nursing student credits;
  • Utilization of the Banner Registration and all university systems, e.g., Finance;
  • A minimum of four years’ experience in a supervisory capacity within an accredited institution of higher learning;
  • An active (or the ability to immediately secure) unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia; and
  • A doctorate in nursing, or a graduate degree in nursing and a doctoral degree in a related field.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
