Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University services approximately 4,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.

The Division of Sciences and Mathematics (DSAM) within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia is seeking a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Mathematics to teach undergraduate mathematics courses designed for a diverse population of students in the major, related disciplines, and general education program. The incumbent will be required to prepare and deliver relevant curriculum to students in their courses, using a variety of teaching methods to include, but not limited to, lecture, class discussion, demonstration labs, and projects. Experience advising students and supervising undergraduate research projects is preferred. Candidate must possess a demonstrated record of scholarly activities. This incumbent will strengthen the Mathematics Program's commitment to producing Mathematicians from under-represented groups with a strong foundation in mathematical theory and mathematical modeling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

• Teach undergraduate mathematics courses.
• Participate in the ongoing development and assessment of the mathematics program, broadening math supports across disciplines
• Lend voice to the evolution of the General Education Program as it relates to the Mathematics Program
• Support pipeline from area public and public charter schools to the BS in Mathematics
• Support pipeline from BS in Mathematics to Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
• Support Accreditation of programs across the University
• Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues.
• Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide relevant and engaging assignments that facilitate real-world applications of concepts covered.
• Provide students with timely information and feedback on their academic progress in the course.
• Participate in professional development training on an ongoing basis.
• Develop or sustain a research agenda related to trends in instruction, current literature in mathematics, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
• Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
• Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
• Participate in program, division, and college service activities.

Minimum Job Requirements
 

• Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related Mathematics sub discipline is required.
• Teaching experience at the college/university level is required — two years required of assistant professor candidates; five years required of associate professor candidates.
• Evidence of promotion in rank and tenure approval for associate professor candidates.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Outstanding communication skills.
• Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, and prior training and educational experience.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
